Since the move to the AM2 platform excludes the old Athlon 64 processors from this test, there’s a gap in prices between the top-end Sempron and the X2 3800+. To confuse things further, AMD recently announced a new 2 x 1MB model, the 2.6GHz 5200+, so the family now consists of just five processors – the 3800+, 4200+, 4600+, 5000+ and 5200+, as well as the flagship FX-62 – yet it still manages to cover a wide range of prices. We’ve included them here (the 4000+, 4400+ and 4800+), but their high prices make them poor value. But in June 2006, preferring to consolidate the line, AMD put an end to the 2 x 1MB models, which means there are very few available to buy. Initially, much like the Semprons, there were two CPU models at each clock speed, one with a pair of 512KB Level 2 caches and the other with twice that amount. Until very recently, the Athlon 64 X2 family comprised the 2GHz 3800+ up to the 2.6GHz 5000+. They tend to cost more for the privilege. The move to AM2 brought a reduction in TDP to 89W, but AMD has also released Energy Efficient Athlon 64 X2s, which cost a little more but result in a lower TDP of 65W. They all operate with a HyperTransport frequency of 1GHz and support Cool’n’Quiet for maximum energy efficiency during idle moments. This will be different for eveyone but I just wanted you all to know that this processor CAN do 2.7GHz when tweaked right. All models support virtualisation, NX-bit security and, naturally, they’re still 64-bit CPUs. Seriously! I overclocked this to 2700MHz (2.7GHz) by leaving the multiplier alone (10x), setting the reference number (FSB) to 270 and setting the RAM ratio to 5:6, letting the motherboard relax to 4X (800MHz) instead of 5X (1000MHz). Why would i want to replace the motherboard, RAM, and CPU for at least a few hundred when this CPU (3800 X2 Toledo) can knock the socks off all AM2 CPU's up to the 6000+ X2's. I have 2GB of very low latency RAM, yes DDR1, a great motherboard, and a fast video card (7900 GTX). I have too much invested in mine to replace it. I just HAD to build another for this price! This IS the way to go if you want to extend the life of your 939 system. Overall Review: This is my second X2 3800 Toledo I've bought in the last 2 months. Ha! Good luck finding an FX-60 and if you do they're going for more than $400.00 still!Ĭons: Ha! RU Crazy! A great way to extend the life of your 939 system for well under a large bill! These numbers a about 1% to 5% faster than the 939 based 4800 X2's and an FX-60's. Multi-media: Integer 50650, 55930 Floating Point
